Ger van Elk

Dutch, 1941 - 2014

Ger van Elk (1941-2014) is considered to be one of the pioneers of conceptual art in the Netherlands. In the 1960's he developed a theoretical foundation which was employed throughout his oeuvre. In his work he constantly questioned beliefs in traditional techniques and materials, the role of the artist and of artworks. Later, in the 1980's, Art History became a central theme in his oeuvre, reflecting on artists such as Willem Kalf and themes such as landscape and the self-portrait.
