Anant Joshi

Mumbai, 1969

Born in Nagpur, India. Lives and works in Mumbai.

Anant Joshi graduated from the J.J.School of Art in Mumbai (BFA 1994, MFA 1996). He participated in a two years residency at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam (2002-2003), working extensively on ceramic based installations. In 2004 he received the prestigious Prix de Rome for his work, shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His paintings as well as his installations reflect Joshi’s simultaneously sinister and comic approach towards urban alienation and cultural displacement. His work merges spectacle with the dark violence that arises from a mundane acceptance of everyday urban life and thus the artist lures us seductively into the dramatic theaters of public and private protest.
