KLAAS GUBBELS WINS SINGERPRIJS
We are very happy to congratulate Klaas Gubbels for winning the Singerprijs! The prize consists of an exhibition and the purchase of an artwork by the museum. Every two years an artist is celebrated this way for their entire oeuvre. The exhibition at Singer Laren is on view until October 2nd.
In 1952 Klaas Gubbels started his education at his birthplace Rotterdam, at the Academy of Visual Arts. He continues his apprenticeship at Arnhem's Academie Kunstoefening until 1958. There, Hendrik Valk coaches him in lithography. Besides graphics, he throws himself into painting, followed by all kinds of other techniques. In 1958 Gubbels moved into a studio in a former coach-house on the Lichtenbeek estate in Arnhem. He continues to work here every day.
He’s spent most of his career painting images of tables, jugs, bottles and pitchers. Now and then he adds a piece of fruit. This might be seen as repetitive or monotonous. It is, however, intimate and inviting. The use of homely everyday objects makes it legible for everybody. So ordinary and with minimal means that you would almost think he doesn’t care at all. The results are paintings that hit close to home and captivate a soul in colour and shape.
After honoring Klaas Gubbels at Singer Laren, don't forget to see his works at the Gallery. The exhibition KLAAS GUBBELS & EMO VERKERK | PAINTINGS is on view until July 16th.
